What to ask before you hire a life coach (10 questions)
Coaching is not regulated in most places, so the quality of the person matters more than the title. These are the questions we would want you to ask us, and any other coach.
About them
- What is your background and training, and how long have you coached?
- Who do you work best with, and who do you not take?
- Can I speak to a past client or read a full testimonial, not just a quote?
About how it works
- What does a session look like, and what happens between sessions?
- How will we know it is working? What would we measure?
- What do you expect of me?
Still with me? If this is starting to sound like your own situation, the fifteen-minute call is free and there is no pitch.
About boundaries
- When would you refer me to a therapist or doctor instead?
- What do you do with the things I tell you? Is it confidential?
About money
- What does it cost in total, what is included and what happens if I stop early?
- Is there a trial session or a clear way to leave if it is not a fit?
Common questions
In many countries no. Check whether the coach holds a recognised credential and ask what it involved.
Yes. Use it to ask the questions above, not just to listen to a pitch.
Then say so. A good coach would rather you find the right person than stay in the wrong fit.
Still not sure? The fifteen-minute discovery call is free, and it is a real conversation rather than a sales call. You will get a straight answer about whether this is for you — including when it is not.
