How to set goals you will actually keep

Goal-setting fails in a predictable place: the goal is about an outcome you do not control, with no weekly action attached. Here is a way to fix both.

Pick fewer goals than you want

Three active goals is a lot. One or two is better. Attention is the limiting resource, and every extra goal costs some of it from the others.

Turn the outcome into behaviour

Lose weight is an outcome. Walk for twenty minutes on weekdays is behaviour. You can control the second. Choose goals where the weekly action is clear enough that you know on Friday whether you did it.

Write the reason in one sentence

On a bad day the goal alone will not hold you. The reason will. Write one sentence on why this matters to you, in your own words, and keep it where you will see it.

Check weekly, adjust monthly

Every week ask: did I do the thing, and if not, what got in the way? Once a month ask whether the goal is still the right one. Changing a goal after real thought is not quitting.

Common questions

How many goals should I have?

One or two at a time works for most people.

What is wrong with SMART goals?

Nothing. They are a useful checklist, but they do not give you a weekly action or a reason, which are what keep you going.

What if I miss a week?

Look at what blocked you, shrink the weekly action if needed and continue. One missed week is data, not failure.
